From the beginning, Chronos Vocal Ensemble has championed Canadian music and over the last decade has supported the creation of new works through premieres, recordings, commissions, and its composition competition. At the recent Podium conference, Jordan Van Biert was able to catch up with a number of composers important to Chronos…
Montreal-based Edward Enman was the winner of Chronos’s Composition Competition in 2021 with All the love that lies beneath. This beautiful work has now been published by Cypress Choral Music. It also appears on Chronos’ “Resolve” recording (available for download here)
Finally, Jordan caught up with Gerda Blok-Wilson, the most recent winner of the Composition Competition. We look forward to working with her! Gerda is Artistic Director for Vancouver Cansing Choirs and the Artist-in-Residence at St Patrick’s Regional High School. Her competition-winning I Am Not Yours will be premiered during Chronos’s next season.
Andrew Balfour’s oratorio nôtinikêw: going to war is now pending publication! Premiered in 2018 by Dead of Winter in Winnipeg, a reworked version kicked off the Chronos concert season in 2022 and provided the means to assist Andrew in preparing this score for publication. We are very excited for this work to be available to the larger choral community in the near future! Andrew’s works regularly appear on Chronos programs, including this weekend!
