This program explores the theme of empathy and reaching across real or perceived barriers. Our three commissioned composers are each setting contemporary poets. Nicholas Ryan Kelly was the first winner of our composition competition in 2017, and we also included his music in our 2018 recording Fresh: New Music From Canada. This is his first commission with Chronos. This is also our first commission project with Andrew Balfour, whose pieces Ambe and Vision Chant the choir has performed and recorded. This is a first collaboration with Marie-Claire Saindon.
This performance will also feature our 2021 Composition Competition winner, Edward Enman’s All the love that lies beneath, from a trilogy of pieces inspired by lullabies sung to the composer’s daughter.
