This celebrative season opens with a performance reflecting a wide range of human experience and emotion, acknowledging the universal humanity expressed in the choral tradition across history and place. Encompassing joy and sorrow, gratitude and protest, reflection, awe, and wonder; Arise, Arise! will feature new music by Stuart Beatch and Composition Competition winner Carmine Lappano, with foundational choral works by Bach and Mendelssohn.

This performance will be the focal point of our anniversary celebrations, held ten years to the week after Chronos Vocal Ensemble’s first “full concert” in January 2014 at the Cathedral. We celebrate the history and nascent traditions built by the choir, while looking to the future. We look forward to welcoming special guest singers from the choir’s past to the stage, in a performance including the world premiere of a major commission from composer Stuart Beatch, entitled Chosen Family.

This special collaborative performance with the University of Alberta Madrigal Singers (Timothy Shantz, conductor) and Concert Choir (Adam Robertson, conductor) connects us with the past and future. Jordan Van Biert and many Chronos singers are alumni of these influential ensembles. Formed in the early 1970s, these U of A Department of Music ensembles have had a profound effect on the artistic life of Edmonton, as a part of the history that has built a vibrant choral community in this northern city. Through this collaborative performance, Chronos engages with the next generation of skilled and passionate choral singers.

To close the season, we present a long-awaited collaboration with Calgary-based Spiritus Chamber Choir. The combined sounds of these two fine, award-winning ensembles will enthrall our audience, and we will offer a program suited to the scale of that sound! Spiritus boasts a legacy of nearly 30 years of choral excellence, and was one of the exemplary choral organizations that inspired the founding of Chronos a decade ago. These two ensembles first joined together in a Calgary performance in 2015; we are delighted to reciprocate the invitation these eight years later.

A huge Thank You! to our 2023-2024 Season Sponors
