Chronos presents: Inward ~ Onward
Grateful for 10 years of singing; presenting Chosen Family
This performance will be the focal point of our anniversary celebrations, held ten years to the week after Chronos Vocal Ensemble’s first “full concert” in January 2014 at the Cathedral. We celebrate the history and nascent traditions built by the choir, while looking to the future. We look forward to welcoming special guest singers from the choir’s past to the stage, in a performance including the world premiere of a major commission from composer Stuart Beatch, entitled Chosen Family.

Chosen Family by Stuart Beatch
Stuart says: I’m thrilled to be writing a major new work for Chronos’ 10th anniversary! This piece, “Chosen Family”, is a set of four songs adapting poetry by Victoria-based poet John Barton. Each poem memorializes an important person from Barton’s life; together, they tell a narrative of coping with loss through the support of our chosen families. “

Stuart Beatch (b. 1991) is a Canadian choral composer currently living in Edmonton, Alberta. He received a Master of Music in Composition from King’s College London, studying with composer Rob Keeley, and was the Composer in Residence for The Fourth Choir (an LGBT chamber choir in London, UK). Beatch previously studied composition at the University of Alberta and music education at the University of Regina. He is an Associate Composer with the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Canadian League of Composers.
In 2016, Beatch was selected to participate in the Theoartistry programme at the University of St Andrews, where he was mentored by Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan. Later, he was accepted into the inaugural Choral Arts program at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, where he studied with the Latvian composer Uģis Prauliņš.
While Beatch has a special affinity for the Canadian choral community, his music has frequently been sung by vocal ensembles across North America and Europe, including the BBC Singers, Elysian Singers, Voces Nordicae, Pro Coro Canada, National Youth Choir of Canada, Luminous Voices, musica intima, Chronos Vocal Ensemble, Spiritus Chamber Choir, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Cantabile Chamber Singers, Chorus Austin, and Choral Arts Initiative.
