From its inception, Chronos has championed Canadian music and supported the creation of new works through premieres, recordings, commissions, workshops with composers, and our annual composition competition, held since 2017.

We are pleased to announce the 2022-23 edition of our annual Choral Composition Competition for Canadian composers!

The winning entry will be awarded a prize of $1500, and the premiere performance will be presented in concert by Chronos Vocal Ensemble in the next year.

Entries are evaluated anonymously by a jury of Canadian choral professionals, assisted by Chronos Vocal Ensemble’s Artistic Director.

This competition is open to diverse entries, whether aligning with the Western classical canon or from outside that tradition, as well as works which explore aleatoric and indeterminate elements, and/or use graphic notation.

If you or someone you know are interested in applying, visit the Competition page for eligibility, submission guidelines, and FAQs.

Past winners include composers from various regions of Canada and stages of career, and many can be heard on several Chronos recordings (including our latest album RESOLVE), and have been performed at Podium and ACDA conferences.

2017 Nicholas Ryan Kelly – Little Bells

2018 Paul Aitken – Au Clair de la Lune

2019 Stuart Beatch – Your Stars to Hold

2020 Leonard Enns – A Little More Time

Our thanks to the anonymous donor who has graciously funded the competition prize since its inception, and to the Edmonton Arts Council and Alberta Foundation for the Arts for their support of Chronos Vocal Ensemble.
